Simon Thorn is one of those many retired people who wonders how he ever had time to work. As well as a keen interest in railways, both the real thing and in miniature, he sings in a chamber choir, likes long distance walking and, masochistically, supports Portsmouth FC. He is also quite fond of the occasional glass(es) of wine or beer and perpetuates a mid (now late) life crisis by driving Alfa Romeos.

Simon builds pre-grouping locomotives and rolling stock, both in P4 and OO. These are mostly from etched brass and nickel-silver kits, although he also uses white metal and plastic kits. He endeavours to provide as much fine detail in his models as possible but does not see himself as a ‘rivet-counter’. He will be aiming to show how to produce the basic form and outline of a model that looks right regardless of the level of detail.
He will be demonstrating etched kit soldering techniques, discussing the pros and cons of different solders and fluxes, soldering irons, resistance soldering units and soldering torches, plus bending and forming of brass and nickel-silver. He will be using a couple of OO tank locomotive kits and will have finished samples on show.
